CARES Students of the Week!

Online Donations

We have added a permanent paypal "donation" button to the Grainwood Gab in the upper right-hand corner of the blog.  This donation button will be live year-round and provide families an easy way to contribute to Grainwood's activities sponsored by our PTC.  With the Get-Up-and-Go walk-a-thon on the horizon (Friday, May 31), online donations are a preferred option for families and provide a convenient way to support Grainwood.  Thanks for your past and future donations.  Walk-a-thon information should be distributed to students by mid-May.  Enjoy the WARM weekend!

Booka-Wocky

Celebrate a Summer of Reading with Bookawocky!
Saturday, June 8 – Saturday, August 10, 2013

Did you know that students experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer? In contrast, children who participate in educational activities all summer start their next school year ready to learn. Help prevent learning loss in your child with the free offerings at your local library.

The Scott County Library System offers a summer’s worth of fun and enriching activities and reading incentives for kids 0-18 years of age with Bookawocky: A Celebration of Summer Reading. New this summer: kids will have the option of participating in Bookawocky online!

Here’s how to participate:

Earn Prizes (June 8 through August 10).
  • Earn virtual “badges” for things like minutes of reading, writing reviews, and going to library programs.
  • You’ll get a free book when you complete 10 badges and a Bookawocky book pack when you complete 20 badges.
  • Track your badges on paper with our special form OR (NEW!) online with the new Bookawocky website.

Win State Fair tickets.
  • Read a book & complete a review form to enter weekly drawings for 4-packs of State Fair tickets (you may only win once).
  • Turn in reviews from June 8-August 17; drawings will begin in July.

Enjoy free special events and book clubs.
  • Visit your library and pick up a Bookawocky brochure listing the exciting events happening at all the Scott County libraries.
  • Check our website for more details and the most current list of all the free summer events at the Scott County libraries.

Bookawocky is supported by the Scott County Library System and Metropolitan Library Services Agency (MELSA). Thank you to additional prize sponsors: Local Friends of the Library, Minnesota State Fair, Papa Murphy’s Take’n’Bake Pizza, and Zap Arcade.

Hawaiian Day!!

Tomorrow (Tuesday, April 23rd) will be Hawaiian Day at GW! Let's try to bring some bright sunny colors into our day!

Spring Book Fair

Grainwood Families,

Our PTC has brought back the spring book fair to Grainwood.  It will be hosted on Thursday and Friday, May 2 and 3, in the media center.  It is a buy one, get one (BOGO) book fair and a perfect opportunity to purchase a few new titles to support your child's summer reading habits.  All students will visit the book fair with their classroom and it will also be open before and after the spring choir concert on Thursday night, May 2.  This will also be a perfect opportunity for students and families to view our new "Story Walls" mural that artist-in-residence, Greg Preslicka, has recently completed.  Come check it out!

One last thing... of the 25 parent volunteers needed to staff the fair, a few more volunteer opportunities remain.  Could you help us out?  Please check the sign-up below and register to help the PTC if
possible.  Thanks!

CARES Students of the Week!

Photo Contest Reminder

Reminder:

To help celebrate Earth Month in April, GW is again asking for students to take pictures of outdoor nature scenes (plants, trees, sky, water, scenery), but no animal photos this year. Photos must be taken by the student. We can only accept one submission per child.

Students should submit a  3 X 5 or 4 x 6 picture  before April 24th to Ms. Kufrin or Ms. Floden, and remember to put your name and room # on the back.

Green Sneakers Reminder

We have collected 123 pounds of shoes so far, and there are only a few days left to go!  Grainwood is continuing to collect new or gently used sneakers now until April 22nd. There are bins in the front lobby for drop-off. Please connect the shoes together either with a string, a ziptie, tied together or put together in a plastic bag. There should be no large rips or holes and the soles must be intact. The shoes need to be the kind of shoes a student could wear to a Phy Ed class. The shoes will be shipped around the world to kids and adults in need of footwear. Thank you ahead of time for any donations!!

We have allowed extra testing days in the schedule to accommodate the interruption.  Please continue to support your child's best testing practices by encouraging plenty of rest, and providing a healthy breakfast. MCA Testing will continue periodically for grades 3-5 through Thursday, May 9th. Specific testing days should be communicated to you by your child's classroom teacher along with any changes.

Nurses Notes

May/June 2013 Nurses Notes

*       Annual Health/Emergency Contact Letter
*       For the 2013-2014 school year the Annual Health/Emergency form will be sent to your home over the summer. Please mail or return the form by the first day of school.  Please make sure you send it to the health office of the school where your student will be attending in the fall.   If mailing, please mark the envelope “Attention Health Office”.

*       Emergency Action Plans
*       If your student has asthma, seizures, diabetes, severe food allergies, or severe bee sting reactions, we request completion of forms specific to these conditions yearly.  They will be sent home with your student before the end of this school year.  Please return them to school next August with medications and doctor orders, as needed.

*       End of Year Medication Pick-up
*       Medications/Inhalers/Epi-Pens/etc cannot be sent home with elementary and middle school students.  Medications/Inhalers/Epi-pens/etc not picked up cannot be discarded due to the tighter pharmaceutical waste regulations.  Please help the District curtail unnecessary costs by picking up your student’s unused medication.  We recommend leaving rescue medication (Epi-Pens etc) at school until dismissal of the last day.  Please pick up all medications no later than June 6, 2012 (by dismissal time).  Please call your schools Health Office if you wish to make other arrangements.

 Run

All children need to have a pair of gym shoes to use daily. Gym shoes are required for physical education class for safety reasons. …..Sandals, and loose fitting shoes are not safe for gym use and are not permitted. Tennis shoes are a much better choice for active play at recess and during physical education.” Elementary Parent/Student Handbook
Flip-flops are named for the sound they make when you walk — flip, flop, flip, flop — but they could have been called “ouch-umphs”, the sound you'll make after wearing them all the time. Researchers at Auburn University have found that wearing flip-flops alters the way one walks, changing the gait in subtle ways that can lead to serious sole, heel and ankle problems. Flip-flops might feel good because they keep your feet cool. At issue, though, is their utter lack of foot support.

Sandals with heel straps, heel cup, and not too flexible are the healthier choice because your foot doesn't need to clench to keep the footwear secure.
The American Podiatric Medical Association warns that because flips-flops have no backing they can catch on to things as they flip and flop. That may cause people to fall. So the association strongly recommends that people not play sports in flip-flops or do any type of rigorous outdoor activities, including cutting the grass, when they wear these shoes.(JAPMA, Vol 98, No. 5, pgs. 374-378, 2008).
