Summer School

We are pleased to announce that Grainwood Elementary will be hosting an academic summer school program for Westwood and Grainwood Elementary Schools this summer. The summer school curriculum will focus on providing additional instruction for students needing a boost in reading, writing, and math. Eligibility for summer school is based on student need.

Dates: Monday-Thursday, July 9th to August 9th

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

The summer school programming is free. This is an opportunity to extend your child's learning with additional days of instruction focused on your child's learning needs. Summer school attendance will also help eliminate the loss of learning that occurs during the summer. ***For those families whose children will be attending Jeffers Pond or Glendale for Kids' Company, you are invited to enroll in their summer school programs.

Letters and summer school registration forms have been sent to students who have met initial criteria. If you have received the letter and would like your child to attend, please return the completed registration by Friday, May 4. If you have not received the summer school information letter but would like to inquire about your child attending, please call your child's classroom teacher.

Limited transportation IS AVAILABLE to and from Grainwood from collection stops in the Westwood and Grainwood attendance areas. A small donation of $20.00 is requested from families whose children will need transportation. The remainder of the transportation costs will be provided through community grants and scholarship dollars. Students who are transported by their parents should arrive at Grainwood between 8:20 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. and be picked up at Grainwood by 11:30 a.m.

If you have questions regarding the summer school program, please speak with your child's classroom teacher or call the Grainwood School Office at (952) 226-0300. We look forward to the opportunity to work with your child through our summer school program!

Take Your Child to Work Day

Take Your Child to Work Day is nationally recognized on Thursday, April 26, 2012. Unfortunately, this year's date is in conflict with the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA's) test that will be administered to 3rd and 4th grade classes.

While Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools recognizes the educational value a workplace experience provides students, it is important that all elementary schools have full testing participation on April 26th. As a result, we encourage you to bring your child to work on another day, preferably over the summer, so that he or she may still benefit from the experience.

Thank you for your understanding.

A New Lunch Routine

You may have heard from your child this week about our new lunch-line food serving routine that began on Monday, April 9.  In preparation for the new federal law guidelines pertaining to nutrition standards associated with school lunch programs, starting next fall students are required to take a half cup of a fruit or vegetable each day at lunch (they can take both and many already do). Past expectations only required students to have 3 items on their tray without any fruit or vegetable.  In order to monitor that students are taking a fruit or vegetable, the order in which food items in the lunch line are served has been rearranged.  The fruit or vegetable choices are now the first items in line, which has caused the students to say lunch is "backwards."  The food service is instituting this change to prepare students for the next school year.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at school.  Also, check out the following link for more information provided by our school district.

From the Office of the Principal...

Dear Grainwood Families,

On Saturday, April 21, is the annual all-district elementary school carnival. This event has been around for 30+ years and has grown tremendously in terms of its size and meaning to the community. With Grainwood's PTC having co-chaired the event the last two years, the carnival's magnitude was exposed and has forced PTCs (including our own) to rethink their present involvement in it due to: 1) the significant time commitment required for its coordination, and 2) the number of essential volunteers needed for its success and safety for participants. Therefore, this school year, the Grainwood PTC is not participating in any leadership role associated with the carnival. In essence, we decided to partake in a one-year hiatus to consider other options and re-examine our goals pertaining to the carnival.

In exchange for our participation this year, the Grainwood PTC has been developing a Walk-a-thon, the first-ever “Grainwood Get-Up-and-Go,” as a fundraising replacement. This event will be hosted at Grainwood on Friday, June 1st, and involve students collecting funds in a walk-a-thon like fashion. This event is focused on promoting physical activity for students, is the culminating event of a week full of annual fitness activities, and 100% pure profit (with limited overhead costs and volunteer needs). Stay Tuned! More specific information about this event will be distributed to Grainwood families by late April. Overall, we will evaluate this new event and revisit our possible partnership in the carnival for the future sometime next fall.

Grainwood continues to promote and support the all-district carnival being held on April 21. While we will not financially benefit from the event, we invite all Grainwood families to participate as in years past. As usual, come visit me at the Gold Coin Booth and cash in your coins!

Sincerely,

Patrick Glynn
Grainwood Principal
