SCHOOLOGY has Arrived!

Parents and Guardians of K-5 Students:

Last week you should have received an email from the district about our new learning management system called Schoology. Schoology is a digital extension of the classroom that has replaced traditional teacher web pages. Users will immediately notice an interactive “Facebook-like” feel, which is great for collaboration and communication, but Schoology also allows teachers to make resources available to students and parents in a format that acts like a digital extension of the classroom.  Unlike Facebook, Schoology is not based on “friends” but on “educational colleagues.” Everything about it serves an academic purpose that is delivered in a safe and secure manner.

There are many benefits for parents using Schoology:

COMMUNICATION - Schoology allows parents to get information from all teachers working with their children, get updates about their classroom, assignment notebook and calendar. Schoology will not replace other district tools for communication with parents and families. Personal information such as student's grades, attendance, bus stop, and address/email information will still be housed in Skyward Family/Student Access using existing login information. There will still be list serve emails sent out to parents for time-sensitive communications and educators will still use email and phone calls for personal conversations.

LEARNING - Teachers are slowly integrating Schoology into classroom instruction in an age-appropriate way. As students progress through elementary school, they will be asked to use more of Schoology’s functions to complete classroom assignments and projects.

SAFETY - Schoology is designed for educational purposes and contains safety features to protect student information.  Interactions on Schoology cannot be viewed from outside of our district community of staff, students and parents. The collaboration will also be managed by the teacher, and individual contributions will appear as anonymous to other students and parents. For students to interact with Schoology outside of the school day, they must enter their personal username and password that each has received through media specialists.  Instructions for student access from home are attached.

How do parents start using Schoology?
For parents to use Schoology, they too must create their own unique username and password.  Parent accounts will be automatically linked to each of their students through a parent access code found in Skyward Family/Student Access (one per child).  By using the parent access codes, parents will be able to view all of their children’s activity in Schoology. Parents can also manage daily or weekly notifications of student work and connect with instructors privately. Parents will not have the ability to comment or post in a way that others can view. Directions for Parent Schoology login are attached.

Schoology will be a great tool for learning in PLSAS, but it is still a work in progress. Teachers are becoming familiar with this platform and are making plans for how it will best serve the students in their classroom. Our goal is to have all Schoology courses populated and active by October 16.

FYI...Accessing Schoology from home is not part of the district’s requirement for students to be successful in school. During the day, students will have access to Schoology when appropriate and necessary. For parents who do not have access to a home computer or mobile device, teachers will continue to communicate via the phone, hard copies of resources/assignments, and by appointment.

Thank you for your time and attention as we launch this exciting new learning tool.

If you have questions or need support with Schoology, please contact us at ithelpdesk@plsas.org.

Junior Naturalist Applications coming home today

Today, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be bringing home Junior Naturalist Applications.

Our Junior naturalists are kids who LOVE to be outside and kids who LOVE to learn more about our environment!  They are GW leaders who are willing to get dirty, ask questions and explore the world around them.  They not only learn outside every chance they get, but they are also leaders by helping our GW community become a more earth-friendly place to learn!

CARES Students of the week

Grainwood CARES Students for the week of Sept 16th!

SPAN - Synergy/SAGE Parent Action Network

SPAN (Synergy/SAGE Parent Action Network) is the Prior Lake/Savage chapter of Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented (www.mcgt.net ). Our first meeting will be on Monday October 7th  at 7pm in the WestWood Media Center and will focus on our plans for the year as well as welcome speaker Erin Boltik (Director of Gifted Programs and Services in the Bloomington School district) to talk about Gifted 101…What every parent of a gifted child should know.  In particular, Erin’s presentation is designed to help parents understand the needs of schools, affirm their position as an essential advocate for their child, and support everyone’s efforts to do what is best for a child/student.   Please email Apryl at span.priorlake@gmail.com  with questions and/or to be included on the SPAN email list, and see our website at www.mcgt.net/priorlake to see our complete meeting schedule.  We hope to see you at our October meeting!

Morning Drop-off

With some students being dropped off each morning, please take into account the law and safety at all times.  Here a few reminders and ideas:

1.  Students are monitored in the AM beginning at 8:15.  Be early when dropping off your child.  In poor weather conditions (rain or extreme cold), students are allowed inside the building.
2.  Please do not park in or block the three designated handicap spaces or the yellow striped area in the front of the building.  We have several students and families who require the handicap spaces each morning.  Please be mindful of their needs.
3.  Drop your student off down the sidewalk near St. Paul Avenue.  He/she/they can walk up the sidewalk and still enter school on time.
4.  Lastly, go slow, take your time, and please do not go around other cars and block on-coming traffic or let your child out in the middle of the street.

Thank you for your attention to a safe and peaceful morning drop-off!  Safety should be number one priority for everyone!

Chip Shoppe Fundraiser Starts Today!

Today your son or daughter brought home Grainwood's fall fundraiser packet.  We launched the event this afternoon with an all-school assembly, which triggered a lot energy and excitement from the students!  For the fourth consecutive year, we have partnered with the Chip Shoppe for this event.

Please review the fundraising procedures with your child.  He/she has been encouraged only to sell to family, friends and well known neighbors.  Door-to-door sales have not been encouraged.  A prize catalog is included in your child's packet, along with a letter on green paper from the principal about an alternative donation option (for those who would prefer their child not sell items).  Thank you for all your support with either option.  Fundraising orders are due Tuesday, October 1.  Product delivery will take place on Thursday, November 7.  Safe and happy selling!

PTC Update

The Grainwood PTC recently had its first meeting of the year. Plans were discussed for this year in terms of fundraisers and contributions to the school.  Our three big fundraisers will again include The Chip Shoppe this fall (Kick-off is this Thursday, September 19), Butter Braid sales in the spring and the second year of the Walk-a-thon in late May.

We will continue to promote volunteering in our school in both the classroom and through fundraising to support the school in providing many wonderful educational programs and opportunities here at Grainwood. If you have not filled out a volunteer form yet, please ask for one from your child’s teacher or the Grainwood office. There are many opportunities available throughout the year!  With PTC distributing its leadership over 24 coordinator positions, volunteer commitments are specific, often time-bound and require a respectful and limited time commitment.  This model has worked well and allows parents to be involved without intruding on other family commitments. Please feel free to contact Kim Frantz, PTC President, at frantzkim@hotmail.com for more information.

Our next meeting will be held Tuesday, October 1st from 6:30-8pm in the Grainwood Conference Room. We invite you to join us and thank the new parents who have already taken time to participate. As always, parents are invited to attend and hear about what is happening at Grainwood from the principal, the teachers and the parents, as we all strive to meet the needs of Grainwood's students.

Fire and Lock Down Drills

As you may have heard from your child after school Friday, we completed our first of five required fire and lock down drills in the afternoon.  We typically host these drills back-to-back in order to limit interruptions.  Teachers were well aware of the scheduled times for the drills on Friday, allowing them plenty of opportunity to review expectations and practice with their students (especially those kindergarteners).  The next four drills are unscheduled, but are always announced as drills over the intercom system.  Here's to making Grainwood a safe place!

Breakfast Update

Dear Grainwood Families,

We have had 3 weeks of breakfast here at Grainwood and our numbers of participants are slowly growing. Here are a few reminders as other kids begin to inquire or show interest. First of all, breakfast is available to all students. If your child receives free or reduced priced lunch, breakfast is free. For all other students, the cost is $1.40 each morning. Cereal is always an option, along with a rotating (usually warm) choice. When students arrive at school, whether on the bus or at the front door, they are immediately allowed to enter the building and go straight to the cafeteria. Afterwards, they are administered a pass to return to their classroom. The pass simply states, "I was at breakfast."  Classroom teachers then know not to mark students absent or late. Please converse with your own child about his/her option for breakfast at Grainwood.  We will support whatever plan you choose for your child. Please contact Food Service or the Grainwood Office with any questions.  Thanks!

Early Release Days

The ultimate worth of professional development for teachers is the essential role it plays in the improvement of student learning.  Research states that the best way to improve student achievement is to increase our teachers' effectiveness.

In order to provide professional development opportunities for our staff, four early release days have been built into the district calendar this year.  Please be aware that Oct. 31, Jan. 16, & Mar. 20 will be early release days for students.

At Grainwood, students will be released from school at 1:00 p.m. on early release days.  Please remember to work these days into your family's schedule in order to provide for your child's daycare needs.  We appreciate your cooperation!

The last day of school, May 29th, students will be released from school at 12:00 p.m

Nurse's Office Note

Seasonal Flu -Find a Flu Clinic

Screenings
Will begin soon and continue throughout the school year.  This year, vision screening will be done for 1st and 4th grade; hearing screening for 1st and 3rd grade; and 3rd grade students will have weight and height measured and BMI (Body Mass Index) calculated  (once BMI's are completed parents may then access this information via Family Access).  Please call your school’s health office if you have concerns or questions regarding screening, if you do not wish to have your child screened.  Grainwood Vision and Hearing Screenings are on Sept 25th.

Head Lice Information

As always please remember to check your student for head lice periodically throughout the year.  Information about head lice is available on the Health Services website:  www.priorlake-savage.k12.mn.us, click on Services, click on Health Services, click on Head Lice Information and Head Lice Q&A.  If you do not have access to a computer, please call the Health office for a hard copy.

School Lunch Program

The price for hot lunch this year will be $2.35, including milk.  Milk can be purchased separately for $.45 per half pint.  Please be reminded that the computerized system operates on individual student accounts, NOT family accounts.  Money for hot lunch can be sent to school with your child on any school day and it can be credited to more than one individual account; if you indicate that on the envelope.

Information regarding your child's lunch account can be obtained by signing up at www.paypams.com.  There is no charge to sign up or to check account information and you may make payments to your child's account by credit or bank card without a fee.

The price for adult lunch is $3.35.  However, parents need to be aware that per state law, they cannot use their child's lunch account to charge an adult lunch.  Lunch menus are published on our district and school websites, the Prior Lake American and Savage Pacer.

Additional questions concerning the lunch program can be addressed to Joanie Freidlund (226-0308) or Marla Fulkerson (226-0314).

Constitution Day at Grainwood

On Tuesday, September 17th, GW will be celebrating Constitution Day. There will be a brief announcement in the morning, along with a connection made to the classroom constitutions that are being created as part of the beginning of the school year routines with Responsive Classroom. Please have your child wear red, white and blue to help us celebrate!

Attendance Procedures

Regular, on-time attendance is necessary for our student’s academic success. It also promotes positive work ethic for employment skills and future success. Please be reminded that parents / guardians are required to notify the office via a note or telephone call prior to 8:30 a.m. on or before the day their child will be absent for any reason. Our voice mail attendance hotline (952-226-0301) is open 24 hours a day. Failure to call may result in an unexcused absence for your child. Students are considered tardy if they arrive at school after 8:30AM.

The 2013-2014 Parent/Student Handbook outlines the reasons that will be accepted for excused absences and examples of unexcused tardies and absences.

In order to provide the very best education for your children, they need to be in attendance. Missed assignments can be completed. However, it is extremely difficult to replicate instructional activities, discussions, small group work, etc. that have taken place while your child was absent from school. Although we know that illnesses cannot be avoided, we hope that you will make every effort to schedule family vacations during the summer or one of our scheduled school breaks. Thank you for your cooperation!

Visitors Welcome

We welcome visitors to Grainwood and thank the many volunteers who assist us!  Because of the need to maintain the highest safety for students, we request that all visitors sign in at the office.  All visitors and/or volunteers must wear an identification sticker which identifies them to staff that they have checked in at the office.

If you plan to visit your child's classroom, we request you make plans ahead of time with your child's teacher.  In order to maximize uninterrupted classroom instruction time, visitors are limited to a maximum of two volunteers per classroom for one hour.  Volunteers working outside the classroom area may be present for more extended periods of time.  Planned visits help minimize disruption to classroom instruction.

Parents are also welcome to eat lunch with their child and may purchase an adult lunch for $3.35.  Feel free to contact the office if you need to know what time your child eats lunch.

We appreciate you adhering to these visitor guidelines.  Thank you for helping make Grainwood a safe and positive environment for learning.

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

For the well-being of your child, please remember to turn in your updated emergency information as soon as possible.  If your child becomes ill or injured at school, this information, along with current telephone numbers, are critical for our health office and office staff!  If there are any legal proceedings regarding the welfare of your child, please make sure our office has a copy of the appropriate legal papers as well.

Grainwood Picture Day is Scheduled for September 27th.

Picture retake is scheduled for October 23rd.
Students in District 719 take the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) reading and math test in grades two through five. Fall testing will take place September 16th through September 23rd. The purpose of the test is to assess student performance in both reading and math.

Students in grades two through five will have scheduled times in the computer lab to complete MAP testing. The MAP test is a computer adaptive test. Questions are generated based on the previous question's response for each student. As a result, the test is truly individualized.

Student scores on the MAP will be sent home with parents at fall conferences. Scores are reported in RIT scores (short for Rausch Unit). The RIT score is an equal-interval scale which can measure growth in learning. A chart will also be sent to parents showing the average RIT scores across the nation for students at different grade levels. RIT Charts that show examples of the kinds of questions on the MAP test can be found at http://www.nwea.org/ under Assessment System, then Assessment Product.

CARES Heroes of the Week

Our first CARES Heroes of the Week!

Box Tops

Box Tops 4 Education provides Grainwood an opportunity to earn extra cash to help fund student activities throughout the year.  We are very appreciative of all the families who have taken the time to collect their box tops, cut them out, and send them to school.  The collection box by our front entrance to the gym is filled and unfilled throughout the year (Thank you, Mrs. Fowler, for all your help!) and individual classrooms are recognized monthly at our All School Meeting for having the most box tops each month.  (Hosting Thunder and Lightening, Grainwood's pet stuffed horses, is a big deal around here!)  To help with the collection of the box tops, collection sheets are available at BoxTops4Education.com.  Look under EARN, then CLIP BOX TOPS, then COLLECTION PROJECTS at the left of the page for themed collection pages (in PDF form) to print at home and begin collecting.  Or, just tape your boxtops to a piece of scrap paper in groups of ten (just like in the picture).  Pre-grouped box tops are greatly appreciated, for this is how they need to be organized when redeemed.  Also, please put your child's classroom teacher's name on all donations.

A big submission of Box Top labels is due at the end of October.  Please turn in all of your Box Top labels by then!  Thank you for supporting Grainwood!

From the Office of the Principal

Greetings Grainwood Families,

We endured the heat of the first week (thank goodness for air conditioning at GW) and started the year focussing on routines and expectations.  I hope your child had a successful week!  I am sure he/she is tired due to possible new wake-up times and morning routines.  The office staff has received many positive comments on the new arrangement of their work stations.  There certainly seems to be a more natural flow for the office traffic.  Thank you for always signing in if you are joining us during the school day.  Safety is our number one priority!

Attached here is a list of questions to help make the most of your conversation with your child throughout the school year.  Instead of getting the remark, "it was fine" to your, "How was school today?," try these questions instead:

http://www.ncld.org/parents-child-disabilities/family-coping-ld/13-questions-to-ask-child-about-school

I hope your child has a positive second week and beyond.  I would imagine homework will start for most grade levels this week (if it has not already).  Just a reminder that breakfast is being serviced daily and all students can participate.  Students do not need to register; they simply attend.  Lastly, if you have a concern or question, please speak with your child's teacher first.  They want to know.  As your principal, I am always available to be of assistance too, but contact with the teacher first is usually always best. Thank you and let's have a wonderful school year together!
