May Music News

In the music room, we have started a STOMP unit in 5th grade in which students are creating their own rhythmic patterns and performing them with "found" instruments such as bottles, sticks, pencils, and even water jugs. Our fourth grade classrooms are working hard at achieving their recorder belts as they learn many new songs such as "Old Macdonald" "Amazing Grace" and "Ode to Joy."

Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House

Student Council members helped package Grainwood's collection of aluminum pop tabs for delivery to the Prior Lake McDonald's this week. Grainwood has been collecting pop tabs for many years as a service learning project benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Minnesota. The giant collection barrel, which sits in our main entrance, has grown throughout the year and its contents filled two and a half french fry boxes. Thanks for supporting Grainwood's service learning opportunities.

Grainwood Yearbooks

The Grainwood yearbooks are here. If you have not purchased one already, there are extra copies available in the office. The cost for the yearbook is $16.00.

Kindergarten Egg Drop

Last Friday afternoon, all kindergarteners at Grainwood participated in the annual "Egg Drop!" This tradition, throughout the district, involves kindergartners creatively wrapping and protecting an egg for a toss from the top of the building. What a collection of creativity and engineering! Thanks to all the parents that helped their students with this project. It was a beautiful afternoon and Manny and Mr. Glynn happily tossed all eggs to a very excited group of kindergartners (parents and staff too) waiting below. Rumor has it about 50% of the eggs survived.

Camp Invention 2010 INNOVATE

Join us at the Camp Invention program held at Twin Oaks Middle School on July 12-16 from 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM! This program is being hosted by Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools Community Education and will be directed by Melanie Anderson. Each day, children will rotate through five exciting, hands-on modules that require imagination, creative problem-solving, and teamwork to solve real-world challenges.

Children will be challenged to rebuild a virtual world and act as entrepreneurs as they establish a new marketplace in Hatched™, explore alternative energy and build their own motorized creatures in Power’d™, and discover surprising mathematical connections like tessellations and fractals in SMArt: Science, Math & Art™. In I Can Invent III™, younger children will take apart discarded small appliances and create fantasy inventions, while older children will use the pieces and parts to build multi-step Rube Goldberg machines that create a "mini-explosion". Also featured will be the Global Games™ module, where children will explore ancient cultures and sports like lacrosse and soccer from civilizations around the world. Local teachers will facilitate the program modules, and enthusiastic high school and college students will serve as the program counselors. This renowned program features a low staff-to-child ratio, with one staff member for every eight children.

The registration fee includes a Camp Invention T-shirt. Register before March 31st or with a friend to receive $25 off the base price of $225. Availability is limited, so visit www.campinvention.org or call 800.968.4332 to reserve your child’s spot today! For children entering grades 1-6.

Welcome Kindergartners!

This morning and afternoon, the Kindergartners from Edgewood, who will be coming to Grainwood next year for First Grade, had the chance to visit the building. We hosted 30 enthusiastic students for lunch, a tour and short visit to the playground. They had many curious questions, waved to older siblings or friends, and especially loved the gym, art, music and media spaces. For many of them, next year cannot come soon enough!

From the Principal's Desk...

Dear Grainwood Families,

Where has this year gone? We are in the final stretch of the school year, which means “spring fever” is setting in. As students begin finishing up their MAP testing in Grades 2-5, the staff at Grainwood would like your support at home during these last five weeks of school with making sure homework and independent reading are still a priority!

I would like to take the opportunity to thank each of you for the fabulous year I have had at Grainwood. It has truly been a pleasure to be the principal in such a wonderful, supportive and caring community. With the end of the year approaching, planning is already underway for next school year.

Speaking of next year...The Carver-Scott SHIP initiative has decided to move fully ahead with a partnership with Prior Lake-Savage district and Grainwood Elementary in 2010. SHIP is a component of Minnesota’s nation-leading 2008 health reform law. A key element of this reform is working with schools on nutrition policies. I will be working with Carver-Scott representatives in the near future to learn about the grant and its possibilities for our school. Stay Tuned...More to come this fall.

Secondly, congratulations to the 82 Grainwood families for their contribution to Target over the past year. With the redcard rewards program, schools receive back a portion of all purchases at Target. Remarkably, Grainwood should expect at least $2395.77 for their August payout! Wow!This is already $400 more than the payout last year. Thanks for shopping at Target!

Enjoy the summer…continue to support your child(ren) by having them practice their math skills and making sure they keep on reading!
