Early Release Days

The ultimate worth of professional development for teachers is the essential role it plays in the improvement of student learning.  Research states that the best way to improve student achievement is to increase our teachers' effectiveness.

In order to provide professional development opportunities for our staff, four early release days have been built into the district calendar this year.  Please be aware that Nov 7, Jan. 29, & April 9 will be early release days for students.

At Grainwood, students will be released from school at 1:00 p.m. on early release days.  Please remember to work these days into your family's schedule in order to provide for your child's daycare needs.  We appreciate your cooperation!

The last day of school, June 11, students will be released from school at 12:00 p.m

Family Movie Series

How often can you see 6 movies for only $6?  Now you can!

In the interest of quality movie entertainment for the entire family, our school is proud to sponsor, in cooperation with Muller Family Theaters, this Family Matinee Series.

Follow this Link to see the popular, family-friendly movies that have been selected for you and your family's viewing pleasure.  Additional copies of the order form for tickets are available in the office.

A series ticket is good for (1) one admission to each movie and part of the proceeds of each ticket will be donated to our school.

Enjoy!

Fire and Lock Down Drills

As you may have heard from your child after school Friday, we completed our first of five required fire and lock down drills in the afternoon.  We typically host these drills back-to-back in order to limit interruptions.  Teachers were well aware of the scheduled times for the drills on Friday, allowing them plenty of opportunity to review expectations and practice with their students (especially those kindergarteners).  The next four drills are unscheduled, but are always announced as drills over the intercom system.  Here's to making Grainwood a safe place!

Chip Shoppe Fundraiser Under Way!

Yesterday, your son or daughter brought home Grainwood's fall fundraiser packet.  We launched the event yesterday afternoon with an all-school assembly, which triggered a lot of energy and excitement from the students!  For the fifth consecutive year, we have partnered with the Chip Shoppe for this event.

Please review the fundraising procedures with your child.  He/she has been encouraged only to sell to family, friends and well known neighbors.  Door-to-door sales have not been encouraged.  A prize catalog is included in your child's packet, along with a letter from the principal about an alternative donation option (for those who would prefer their child not sell items).  Thank you for all your support with either option.  Fundraising orders are due Wednesday, October 1.  Product delivery will take place on Friday, October 24.  Safe and happy selling!

Jr. Naturalist Applications

Earlier in the week, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students brought home a Jr. Naturalist application.

Our Junior naturalists are kids who LOVE to be outside and kids who LOVE to learn more about our environment!  They are GW leaders who are willing to get dirty, ask questions and explore the world around them.  They not only learn outside every chance they get, but they are also leaders by helping our GW community become a more earth-friendly place to learn!

If your child is interested in being a Junior Naturalist, please have them complete the application and hand it in by this Friday, September 19th.

Morning Drop-Off Procedure

Dear Grainwood Families,

For those who transport their children to school each morning, or on occasion, please notice the NO PARKING signs posted in the grass near the curb.  This should assist in creating a space dedicated for student drop-off each morning.  Please utilize this area for drop-off by pulling over to the curb and letting your child off.  DO NOT pull into the yellow or handicap areas in front of the building for drop-off or stop your vehicle in the street.  Dropping off at the curb, between the signs, will create the safest drop-off scenario for all!

1.  Students are monitored in the AM beginning at 8:15.  Be early when dropping off your child.  In poor weather conditions (rain or extreme cold), students are allowed inside the building.
2.  Please do not park in or block the three designated handicap spaces or the yellow striped area in the front of the building.  We have several students and families who require the handicap spaces each morning.  Please be mindful of their needs.
3.  Drop your student off down the sidewalk near St. Paul Avenue.  He/she/they can walk up the sidewalk and still enter school on time.
4.  Lastly, go slow, take your time, and please do not go around other cars and block on-coming traffic or let your child out in the middle of the street.

Thank you for your attention to a safe and peaceful morning drop-off!  Safety should be number one priority for everyone!

Grainwood has a NEW School Social Worker!

Dear Grainwood Families,

I want to take this moment to share information about a staffing change that has recently taking place at Grainwood for the upcoming year.  Cheryl Wendt, our school social worker and long-time district employee, has excepted a new position outside of the district (in a leadership role) and will not be returning this fall.  Congrats to Cheryl!  In her place, we are very excited to announce that we hired Renee Krausert, Edgewood's part-time social worker, to be a part of the Grainwood team.  Welcome Renee!  Please introduce yourself to Mrs. Krausert at Open House next Thursday, September 4.

Transportation Information

Grainwood Families,

Transportation information is now live in Infinite Campus. The attached list serve (click link HERE) was sent out to all families today notifying parents of bus stop information, school meal options, data privacy opt-out forms and a host of other important details as families prepare for the first day of school.

Please note that some transportation information is still being loaded into Infinite Campus for students with dual households for busing. That information will be complete prior to the start of school. This has also been communicated to parents in the list serve and within the Infinite Campus message section.

Grainwood Office to Communicate with Schoology

Dear Grainwood Families,
Early this fall, Grainwood will be supporting families to make sure they are fully utilizing Schoology as a primary communication tool between school and home.  To support our efforts, the Grainwood office (and all elementary school offices) will be transitioning away from current formats (for example: our school blog) to Schoology full-time.  We thank you for your patience during this transition.
Please be aware that Schoology 101 will be offered to families during the assessment days on September 8+9.  While your child is being assessed, staff will be assisting parents (most likely in a Grainwood computer lab) to make sure connections and settings are properly in order for strong communication throughout the year.
As your building principal, I am also growing my own knowledge and will be practicing with Schoology the remainder of the summer.  Please follow along.  Lots yet to learn!
Hope you all are enjoying your summer!

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge - Log-In Help

Dear Grainwood Families,
If you are having issues logging in to keep track of your summer reading minutes, please try the following solutions.

1) Click on the "forgot your password?" link below the log-in area.  That should take you to a screen where you will enter your screen name (username) and answer a security question.  Your child picked this security question at school when they practiced logging in for the first time.  If that question is answered correctly, the username and password should pop-up for you to see and log- in successfully.

2) Contact Scholastic Customer Service:

We are also pleased to inform you that on September 8 and 9, all students in grades 1-5 will meet with their new, 2014-15 teacher individually for approximately 30 minutes for literacy assessments.

You will receive communication in early August that will include information on how to sign-up for an assessment appointment online.

We are already looking forward to welcoming your student to the 2014-15 school year!

This camp is for students who are entering 1st to 6th grade!

Please go to www.campinvention.org to register!

Design Studio: Morphed! is a participant-led module that allows your students to invent and tinker with circuits and design solutions to nature-based challenges. Children work together as entrepreneurs, team leaders, and designers as they prepare to bring their invention to market in an environment modeled after real-world research and development spaces. Set your students’ imaginations free as they receive video messages sent by inventors from the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the

In our Amplified module, students explore the dynamic realm of the five senses on a bionic adventure. They’ll form research teams and unlock clues to uncover nature’s blueprints, which hold the key to superhuman senses. To build essential STEM skills, they’ll develop bionic gadgets and explore sensory illusions. They’ll even shoot information down zip-lines to a bionic brain in a final challenge to decode a mega-sensory mix-up. Amplify your students’ senses in this sensational module!

Students build morphing vehicles that operate on land, in the air and underwater in our exciting Super Go module. They’ll utilize nature’s designs to explore energy, fuel, movement, and animal features, and then they’ll apply these discoveries to motor-powered vehicles, in preparation for the Super Go Road Rally. Your students will build ramps, tunnels and high-speed STEM skills that put them on the fast track to success.

Thank you!

#GetUpNGo Update

Dear Families,

By now, most likely all of you have heard about the extra added incentive tied to the Walk-a-thon this year.  YES...if the students raise $7,000, I will have my hair buzzed!  (Thank you CARES Heroes!!!)  With approximately 1 week to go, please assist your child in their fundraising efforts and have all raised dollars returned to Grainwood by Wednesday, May 21.

More importantly, I want to remind everyone why we have a walk-a-thon and the role it plays to assist Grainwood students and families.  Years ago, when Grainwood moved away from participating in the all-district elementary carnival (now on hiatus), we wanted a fundraiser that promoted healthy habits and provided 100% profit.  It was also important that volunteer hours for such an event were reasonable and could accommodate family involvement.  We found this in the #GetUpNGo!

Almost every dollar raised this year will be set-aside for future improvements to our school's playground, which includes equipment and blacktop.  (New blacktop alone will cost $56K.)  While there are no specific plans in order, PTC is dedicated to putting these funds aside and accumulating dollars over the course of a few years to assist in the necessary upgrades for both the playground and blacktop.  (District dollars would also be included.)

Please come join us next Thursday, May 22 at about 1:30 PM for the third annual #GetUpNGo.  Walk or watch, come be a part of our wonderful new tradition!

Sincerely (but a bit nervous),

Patrick Glynn
Principal

P.S.  My barber gladly offered to participate on her day off!

If your student has asthma, seizures, diabetes, severe food allergies, or severe bee sting reactions, we request completion of forms specific to these conditions yearly.  They will be sent home with your student before the end of this school year.  Please return them to school next August with medications and doctor orders, as needed.

·         End of Year Medication Pick-up
Medications/Inhalers/Epi-Pens/etc cannot be sent home with elementary and middle school students.  Medications/Inhalers/Epi-pens/etc not picked up cannot be discarded due to the tighter pharmaceutical waste regulations.  Please help the District curtail unnecessary costs by picking up your student’s unused medication.  We recommend leaving rescue medication (Epi-Pens etc) at school until dismissal of the last day.  Please pick up all medications no later than May 29th (by dismissal time).  Please call your schools Health Office if you wish to make other arrangements.
