Fall Harvest Activities - October 31st

As the end of the month approaches, classrooms will be preparing for their annual Fall Harvest Celebrations. We ask that District guidelines are followed regarding students who choose to wear costumes. Costumes are not allowed that depict violence, have weapons, blood, etc. Costumes also need to be culturally sensitive. Please no hair dye or face paint too!

Specific information regarding costumes and classroom activities will be communicated by each classroom teacher.

Alternative activities will be provided for students if parents find any of the Fall Harvest Celebration events to be objectionable. If you wish to have alternative activities prepared for your child, please send a note to your child's classroom teacher ASAP. This will allow him/her to plan accordingly. Thank you!

Watch School Board Meetings and Other School Events on the Web

Our webcasting technology provides convenient access to live and archived streaming of school board meetings through the website.

Residents can review board agendas and minutes posted alongside the video player for live and archived meetings.  Archived meetings are indexed, allowing viewers to select agenda items that interest them instead of watching a meeting in its entirety.

Getting To School On Time

Please make sure that if you are dropping your child off at school that you do everything to make sure they are on time.  Students arriving late are missing out on important learning opportunities.  The beginning of the day is an important time when the teachers are setting the stage for learning.  It is understood that occasionally there will be times a student may be late.  However, please support school expectations by scheduling other activities for your child outside of these hours.  According to our elementary attendance procedures, five unexcused tardies are equal to one day unexcused absence.
Please note that your child should not be dropped off at school in the morning before 8:20 a.m. (unless they are having breakfast, which begins at 8:15 a.m.)  Our staff have meetings and classroom preparations and are not available to supervise students who arrive before this time, unless previous arrangements have been made with the staff member.

A Day Made Better!

At our all school meeting this past Tuesday, representatives from Office Max joined our meeting and presented Mrs. Brenda Houck with their "A Day Made Better" award.  Our school was identified, and Mrs. Houck nominated, for their national recognition of a local teacher. Throughout the summer, the Office Max in Savage collected school supply donations.  In conjunction with their own commitment of other supplies (a new teacher chair, a Kindle Fire HD, a camera, etc.), Mrs. Houck was surprised at our all school meeting with over $2500 worth of school supplies and donations.  What a great event!  A huge THANK YOU to Office Max for their support for local education and to the community for their donations!

September CARES Update

New this year will be a monthly communication about CARES at Grainwood.  To begin with, each month at our all school meeting, The Grainwood CARES Heroes take time to educate and celebrate behavior.  As a PBIS school (please see link on the right side for more info), Grainwood is committed to improving and sustaining building-wide behavioral expectations for students and staff.  Last year, our focus was on bullying.  We created a school definition and described what bullying is and what it is not through videos.  This year, we will continue with our bully education theme with a focus on the "bystander," those witnessing the bullying, and implementing curricula at each grade level with an anti-bully theme.  Students will take on a larger role in the video production for the all school meetings, beginning with grade 5's involvement in October.  Grainwood has also launched an "Adopt-a-Hallway/or Bathroom" challenge as part of CARES.  Congratulations second graders for being recognized yesterday for their hallway cleanliness!  Below is the traveling trophy to be awarded monthly!

Help us promote anti-bully behavior by having your child wear orange on UNITY DAY, next Wednesday, October 9th!

Flip Flop Brigade!

Do you have old summer flip flops that are ready for a new life?  Bring them to Grainwood!  The third grade classes are collecting used flip flops to send to a recycling company that then turns them into fun new things like picnic tables and playground equipment!

Our collection bin will be out in the front lobby until October 15.  Unfortunately, we cannot accept leather flip-flops, cloth flip-flops, sandals, or other forms of shoes.  Come on in and let’s flip those flops into something new!
