Environment Ed Day at Grainwood
Last Monday, June 7, Grainwood hosted its first ever Environment Education Day on the Grainwood Grounds. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY! Here is a short video (my first ever) of some of the events of the day. A huge thanks again to parent volunteers who were able to spend the day with us. Let's hope for great weather in Year 2.

GW Summer Reading Initiative
At our last All School Meeting on Wednesday, Grainwood kicked-off its summer reading event with a little help and a WOWing performance from the fourth graders. Here is an example of the dance, thanks to a new version of last summer's mega hit "I Got a Feelin..." now called "Gotta Keep Reading." If you have not seen this, please take a moment.

We are encouraging students to spend part of their 12 weeks off from school improving their reading fluency and comprehension. Daily reading is the single most important habit your child should continue, no matter the season! On the reading log sent home the last week of school (a link to the log can be found at the bottom of this post), please have your child mark down the minutes he/she reads each day, for a minimum of 300 minutes a month.
For participating in this initiative, your child will receive a free meal at Applebee’s and recognition next fall at an All-School Meeting. A big thank you goes out to the Grainwood PTC and Applebee’s for helping support this initiative. Please make sure your child returns his/her reading log at Back-To-School Night on Wednesday, September 1st to receive a dinner certificate from his/her new classroom teacher. KEEP READING!

And the winner is....GRAINWOOD!
It was announced this morning at the kickoff of our Environmental Education Festival that Grainwood Elementary is the winning recipient of Dick's Sanitation Inc. recycling contest throughout the district. Dave Domack, from DSI, presented a recognition banner, which we promptly attached to the building near our main entrance. For our efforts, DSI is providing a Culver's custard treat for students and staff at lunch on the last day of school. Congratulations Grainwood on your recycling efforts this year!

Junior Naturalists Last Meeting
Grainwood hosted its last Jr. Naturalist meeting this week. A guest botanist joined our students and identified several plants on the Grainwood grounds as the Jr. Naturalists took notes and drew pictures in their nature journals. Also, a special thanks to one of the Jr. Naturalists who brought in a baby wood duck to share with the rest of the students. Prior lake-Savage Community Education and their grant writing efforts should also be thanked for their efforts. Due to their hard work, all Junior Naturalist programs at the elementary schools will be fully-funded for next year!

Field Days!
The past few days, Grainwood students have been participating in PE Activities as part of our end-of-the-year tradition. Mr Larson and crew organized the large field full of games where students were challenged against their peers in multiple events, such as: relay races, bocce ball, capture the chicken, etc. Numerous parents were on hand for the morning or afternoon events. Last Friday also boasted the All-District 5th Grade Field Day. Amongst the beautiful Friday warm weather, Grainwood students well-represented themselves with a few first place honors. Congrats Fifth Graders!
